Become a Referee

At Nepean Referees Group we welcome and embrace new Referees and can accept referees from the age of 13. They will be placed on junior matches and have important roles such as assistant refereeing. Some even get the chance to be an assistant referee on all age matches.

Your path to becoming a Referee can begin right here.  Refereeing football requires someone who remains calm, focused and has a sound understanding and knowledge of the laws of our game.

How to become a Referee

Step 1: Complete the FFA’s free online Laws of the Game modules via etrainu

Step 2: Complete the Online Level 4 Theory aspect (called the Community Junior Football Match Officials course) via etrainu. This costs $33 (incl GST). To access etrainu, go to

Step 3: Do the practical flags and whistle session with NRG (Leve 4 Practical Session).

Step 4: Register as a referee with the Nepean Referees Group for the 2024 season via PlayFootball.

Participants should have completed the Online Laws of the Game (free) and the Level 4 Theory ($33 incl GST) courses PRIOR to attending this practical session.

Our upcoming 4-hours Level 4 Practical sessions are:

  • * Saturday, 20 April 9am-1pm Venue:Penrith City Library – Peter  Goodfellow Theatrette.
  • * Saturday, 25 May 2024 9am-1pm, Venue: Penrith Bowling Club

Places are limited to 15 participants and registration is via the FFA learning portal etrainu.
